As a Lebanese living in Sudan, I feel we should be part of the democratic process in Lebanon. Why can't I just go to the Lebanese consulate in Mogadishu and vote? Why am I excluded from deciding who will govern my country? I do not have any other nationality, I am here to work because there are no jobs left for me in Lebanon; they have all been taken by Syrians, Sri Lankis, Philippinos and other foreign workers. As soon as I have enough money to retire, I want to go back to Lebanon. So can I have at least a say in choosing who will plan the future of my country and my retirement abode?
Any election law that does not take into consideration the rights of Lebanese citizens abroad to vote is bogus.

You are totally right!
Lebanese born people living abroad should have the right to vote!
The people are helping their country by transfering their money to there relatives there, so they are part of the economy cycle. It is not the first time that some officials have emphasized on the role of lebanese living abroad, however very few have ever cliamed their right to vote! Every time a high ranked official visited a country with large number of lebanese immigrants he ask them to help their country of origin as if they are obliged to give their money with nothing in return ....

There is a very important question in here.
I agree that the lebanese immigrants have contributed in the lebanese economy however, are we sure that these immigrants are fully aware of the political parties and candidates in here ? How are they able to make up their choice ? on what basis ?
I think it is not going to be useful anyway to vote from abroad since there is no affectional link between the immigrants and the candidates ! Not to mention that the candidates won't bother travelling to get support from voters they know they can't (as politicians) do anything for them.

Lebman, this is where awareness campaigns play an important role. Websites like this one that provide lively discussions on the daily issues in Lebanese politics are vital to the participation of the Diaspora in government. Lebanese embassies and consulates should be reformed to reach out to the Lebanese citizens in the countries where they are to inform them and update them about Lebanon, with newsletters, e-mails, social and cultural activities, and also with services (medical and legal when necessary) very similar to what other countries of the first world (by contrast to third world) do. This kind of activities keep the citizens up-to-date with the news of their country and keep the embassies up-to-date with the news of the Lebanese citizens abroad. I agree with Zys, the contributions that the Lebanese in the Diaspora can make to the economy of Lebanon are tremendous and can relieve the Lebanese economy from reliance on the financial support of foreigners (saudis and others) and subsequently free the democratic process from undue foreign interference.

Lebanese Abroad: I fully endorse your quest for the right of expatriots to fully participate in elections of their country of origin (both as candidates and voters).

NB. Mogadishu is in Somalia not Sudan! Isn't there a Lebanese consulate in Sudan?
