I wonder if going back to a small Lebanon, geographically, would restore balance to the demographics and help solve some of the problems of identity. Giving up parts of the Bekaa, Akkar and the South, may weaken the pro-Syrian groups and allow the true Lebanese to build a modern state.

Absolutely disagree! We have experienced in the past a form of "christian state" and for me it was a total disaster !!
Our only hope is to be able to restore a democratic country, and here I wonder how americans were able to build such a large country containing a wide range of ethnic and religious groups !?
It is totally unwise to look at the country from a religious angle, it is the mission of the elite in this country to formulate a new way for the lebanese to live in.
I know the transition phase won't be easy, the important thing is not to give up to the traditional politics and reenter the viscious circle of religious conflict whether politically or military...

We do not have to be totally isolated, simply politically and militarily independant so that we do not have to deal with the syrian and the pro-syrian groups and their agendas. We can always reunite after the peace process gets going in the middle east and everybody lives in peace.
