A Syrian Theory:
Yesterday Samir Kassir, today Georges Hawi and tomorrow...
Is there a pattern or logic to these killings? Of course!
For 30 years Syria has raised and supported a political class in Lebanon, the so-called national forces: "al-kiwa al-wataniyya" who fought the other forces in Lebanon "christian militias" since 1977 under the banners of Syrian and Arab nationalism, receiving full military and political support from Syria's army and intelligence. They even evolved into automatons simply receiving orders from Syria's intelligence and executing the will of the Syrian regime in Lebanon. In the recent years, many of those so-called national leaders, who were fighting their fellow Lebanese on the other side for Palestinian and Syrian policies, have decided "magically" to turn against their masters. They thought they could break loose of their masters and exist independent of the Syrian regime and independent of the Syrian intelligence tutelage.
Well for Syria, they were always part of its establishment in Lebanon. So it should come as a surprise to no one that Syria would withdraw them from Lebanon with the rest of its troops and intelligence forces, in compliance with the Security Council resolution #1559.
They are not targeted because they represent independent Lebanon, simply because they refuse to leave with the rest of the Syrian troops. And the list will go on until the last person who served at the will of the Syrian regime in Lebanon is terminated.
Of course there are other theories we can discuss: The Hezbollah Theory, The Israeli Theory and that theory of the Lebanese security systems. |

Nice theory whip. very reasonable.
In fact the targets are not all opposition leaders, simply those from the left (al-yassar) who were backed (sometimes created) by Syria to fight Israel and Syria's ennemies in Lebanon, but now decided to flip against Syria.
From a Syrian perspective, they were simply Syria's agents and Syria fears leaving them behind for 2 main reasons: 1) being accused of non-compliance with 1559 and 2) for fear they may be bought by another master and used against Syrian interests.
So should we even shed any tears for them or applaud Syria for doing what the world expects her to do?
